See them all on Google

A gym is chosen by somebody who has just decided to do something about it, and that decision has a shelf life of about two days.

This is what decides which gym they walk into, why January is the wrong thing to plan around, and what actually moves a gym up the map.

01

You are being found by somebody at a specific moment

Nobody browses for gyms. Somebody decides on a Sunday night that this is the week it changes, searches, and joins one of the first places that makes it easy. If nothing happens in the next two days, nothing happens at all.

the three results almost everybody taps

That short window shapes everything. A gym does not need to be memorable, it needs to be present and frictionless at the exact moment somebody is briefly motivated, and that moment arrives without warning.

It also explains why response speed matters more for a gym than for most local businesses. An enquiry answered on Monday morning reaches somebody who has already talked themselves out of it.

The catchment is bigger than a cafe's and smaller than a specialist's. People will drive ten minutes to a gym and will not drive twenty-five, so the competitive set is every gym within about a suburb or two.

What kind of gym you are is a search of its own

Gym, fitness centre, CrossFit box, F45 style studio, women's only, 24 hour access, personal training studio and reformer pilates are all different searches with different competition, and most gyms only ever claim the first one.

A grid of points across a service area with the ranking at each one marked
where you appear, measured from more than your own driveway

This is the largest missed opportunity in the sector. Ranking for gym near me means competing with every chain in the area on their terms. Ranking for the specific thing you actually are means competing with two or three businesses.

The category on the profile is the lever, and it is free. A studio listing itself as a gym rather than as what it is has chosen the hardest possible search to compete in.

What a gym's profile actually needs

  • The category that matches what you are.

Not the biggest category. The accurate one, because that is where your real competition is thin.
  • Photographs of the actual room and actual members.

Empty equipment shots look like every other listing. A room with people in it does not.
  • Access hours stated properly.

Twenty-four hour access is a filter people search on, and a gym that has it and does not say so is invisible to that search.

Planning around January is planning around the wrong month

January brings the most enquiries and the worst retention. The members who join in a rush in the first week of the year leave fastest, and a gym built to catch that month is built for the least valuable customer it has.

A Google listing showing the categories, hours and reviews a searcher compares
the profile doing most of the work

The steadier work is the rest of the year, where the searches are lower in volume and much higher in intent. Somebody searching for a gym in August has thought about it rather than reacted to a date.

There is a second thing about January that is worth knowing. Every competitor is bidding and posting in the same fortnight, so it is the most expensive and most crowded month to be visible in, for the customers least likely to stay.

A gym that ranks properly year-round gets the August enquiry that nobody else is chasing, and that member is still there in March.

The order worth doing it in

The profile and the category first, then reviews, then a small number of real pages about what you actually offer. A gym website matters more than a cafe's and less than a dentist's.

A short list of the work in the order it happens, with the free parts first
the order that spends the cheap money first

Reviews for a gym behave slightly differently to other businesses. People read them for the atmosphere rather than the equipment, and the reviews that convert say the staff learned their name, not that the machines were modern.

The pages worth having are the ones that answer what somebody nervous is actually wondering. What happens on the first visit, whether it is a contract, whether there are beginners. Those questions are the real barrier, not price.

The order worth doing it in

  • Fix the category and the photographs.

Free, quick, and it changes which searches you are even in.
  • Then get the reviews moving.

Ask every member at the point where they have started noticing progress, not at signup.
  • Then write the two or three pages that matter.

The first visit, the membership terms, and what you actually specialise in.

If you do one thing after reading this, check what category your gym is listed under. If it says gym and you are actually a reformer pilates studio or a 24 hour access club, you have been competing in the wrong race.

Common questions

Should we list as a gym or as what we specialise in?

As what you specialise in. The broad category is the most contested search available and the specific one usually is not.

Is January worth building around?

It is worth running a campaign in. It is not worth designing the year around, because those members leave fastest and everybody is competing for them.

What do gym reviews need to say?

That the staff were welcoming and that a beginner was not out of place. Those convert far better than reviews about equipment.

Does a gym need a website?

A small one. The first visit, the membership terms and what you specialise in. Beyond that the map listing does most of the work.
