For owners deciding where next year’s marketing money goes

Australian search in 2027: what is genuinely shifting, and what has not moved at all.

Three things are genuinely shifting, and the work that wins a local search has barely moved in five years.

He created a stunning website for us that captures and nurtures leads with an automated email marketing system, which has filled a huge gap in the business and saved a lot of time (and money!).

See them all on Google

Most predictions about search are written to sell something. This one separates what has actually changed from what is still the same job it was in 2022.

For a local Australian business, the second list is longer than the first.

01

The three things genuinely shifting

Answers written above the results, more searches finished without a click, and buyers checking a business across several places before they ring.

Each of these changes where a business is seen, rather than what makes it worth choosing.

The three

  • Answers above the results.

A written answer sits above the blue links on more searches every year, which being quotable is about.
  • Fewer clicks per search.

Somebody who gets their answer on the results page never visits a website, and information pages feel it first.
  • Checking in several places.

The listing, the website and the reviews are all read before a call, so a gap in one costs the enquiry.

What is not changing

The map still decides local work, reviews still separate two businesses with the same service, and a page for each service still does most of the earning.

This is the unglamorous half, and for a local business it is where the enquiries come from.

The four

  • The map comes first.

On a local search the map sits above everything, before any written answer.
  • Reviews decide between two.

Two businesses side by side on the map are separated by the reviews, not by anything technical.
  • A page per service.

Still the work that earns, and still the thing most small sites do not have.
  • Being reachable.

Measured across 2,165 Newcastle trade listings in September 2026, 23 per cent had no website at all.

03

What to do differently

Answer questions in plain sentences a machine can quote, keep the listing accurate, and stop measuring visits alone.

Four practical changes, none of which costs anything beyond attention.

The four

  • Write answers, not build-ups.

A question answered in two sentences near the top is what gets quoted elsewhere.
  • Put facts in text, not pictures.

A price or a comparison inside an image cannot be read by the thing doing the quoting.
  • Keep the listing right.

The Google listing is still where a local buyer starts.
  • Measure enquiries.

Visits fall as searches end on the results page, so calls and forms are the figure that still means something.

Common questions

Is SEO dead because of AI answers?

No. Local searches still end on the map or on a website, and the written answers above the results are quoting pages that somebody wrote.

Should a small business change its whole approach for 2027?

No. The listing, the reviews and a page for each service still carry most local enquiries, and none of those has changed.

What is actually different?

More searches finish without a click, answers appear above the results more often, and buyers check several places before they ring.

How should results be measured now?

By calls and form enquiries rather than visits. Visit counts fall for reasons that have nothing to do with how a business is performing.

What does it cost?

One monthly fee covering everything, month to month, no lock-in. The number depends on the business and gets given on the call.
