For workshops competing on general terms against every other workshop

Automotive SEO: everybody types the make of their car before anything else.

Drivers search with the make of their car, and almost no site in the trade names one.

See them all on Google

Automotive covers dealerships, workshops, detailers, tyre shops, panel beaters and parts sellers, and they share one thing: the customer knows the make and model and searches with it.

That single habit is the largest untapped advantage in the industry, and almost every automotive website ignores it completely.

01

People search with the car, and the site never mentions one

The search is not brakes or service. It is Hilux service, BMW specialist, Ranger tyres, Prado suspension, hybrid battery. The make is the first thing a person types because the make is what they are worried about.

This is the strongest and cheapest edge available in the trade. A general workshop competes with every other general workshop in the suburb, and a workshop that says European, or diesel, or hybrid, is competing in a field a fraction of the size.

It also widens the distance somebody will travel, which is where the money is. A driver will pass three general workshops to reach one that specialises in their make, and will not drive five minutes for a workshop that offers everything.

The requirement is that the specialisation is genuinely written down. Most operators know exactly what they are good at, and it appears nowhere on their site, their listing or their services.

The searches worth being on

  • The makes you genuinely know.

European, Japanese, American, whatever you actually see.
  • The fuel and drivetrain.

    Diesel, hybrid, EV, 4WD.
  • The job, not the trade.

Logbook, pink slip, timing belt, transmission, clutch, air conditioning.
  • The compliance work.

Inspections and roadworthy checks are searched constantly and bring people in.

02

The urgent job and the considered purchase behave nothing alike

A breakdown is a small-radius emergency decided in minutes. A new car, a full respray, a set of four tyres or a rebuild is researched for weeks with prices compared and reviews read closely.

The urgent work is won on the map, on proximity and reviews, and there is almost nothing a website can do about it. The considered work is won on the site, and that is where the margin lives.

Price transparency separates the two. For the considered purchase, an operator who publishes a range is chosen over one who says contact us, because the customer's fear is being taken advantage of on something they cannot assess.

This is felt more sharply in automotive than in almost any trade, because everybody has a story about being overcharged for something they did not understand. A page explaining what a job involves and roughly what it costs disarms that directly.

03

The customer cannot check the work, so everything hangs on evidence

A driver cannot tell whether the job was done well. They can tell whether they were kept informed, whether the price matched the quote, and whether the car came back clean, so that is what the site and the reviews have to speak to.

Reviews therefore need to describe the process rather than the outcome. A review saying they rang before doing extra work does more than a five-star with no words, because it answers the specific fear.

Photographs of the actual workshop, the actual team and the actual equipment do the same job. Automotive is a trade where premises say a great deal, and stock photography of a generic garage says nothing at all.

Warranty and guarantee statements are worth being explicit about. What is covered, for how long, and what happens if something is wrong. Most operators offer something reasonable and never write it down.

04

What actually moves it

Name the makes, one page per major job, publish price ranges on the considered work, and ask for reviews that describe how the job was handled.

The make and speciality pages are the engine, and they are unusually durable because a Hilux owner searching next year is searching the same way. One page per make you genuinely handle beats a services list every time.

The job pages carry the considered purchases. Timing belts, transmissions, respray, tyres, hybrid batteries. Each written so a driver understands what they are buying, with a range rather than a silence.

Then the listing, which decides the urgent half: correct hours, real photographs, categories that match what you actually do, and a steady flow of recent reviews.

What to fix, in order

  • Name the makes and specialities.

On the site, the listing and the services list.
  • One page per major job.

With a real price range on it.
  • Say what the guarantee is.

Most operators offer one and never write it down.
  • Ask for reviews about the process.

Being rung before extra work, not the star rating.

Every driver types the make of their car before they type anything else. The operators winning this trade are simply the ones who wrote the make down.

Common questions

How long does SEO take for an automotive business?

Weeks for the listing, three to six months for the make and job pages. The make pages age well, because the way somebody searches for their car does not change.

Should I publish prices?

A range on the considered jobs, yes. The customer's real fear is being taken advantage of on something they cannot judge, and a range answers it better than any reassurance.

Is specialising risky if I want all work?

Naming a speciality does not turn away general work; it gives you a field where you are the obvious answer. Workshops that specialise get customers driving past three competitors to reach them.

What matters most for a breakdown search?

The Google listing and answering the phone. That decision takes a minute inside a map, and the website is not part of it.
