For franchise groups whose locations all look slightly different

A brand kit for a franchise: what head office locks, and what each location controls.

Every location needs the same materials with different details on them, and the kit decides which parts each one can touch.

He created a stunning website for us that captures and nurtures leads with an automated email marketing system, which has filled a huge gap in the business and saved a lot of time (and money!).

A franchise brand kit has one job: every location produces the same materials, with its own details on them, without asking head office each time.

Where that is unclear, locations make their own versions and the group stops looking like one business.

01

What head office locks

The mark, the colours, the type and the way they sit together. These four are the group, and a location changing any of them costs the whole network its recognition.

Locked does not mean hidden. Each location needs the files, along with the rules for using them.

The four locked pieces

  • The mark.

In every version a location will need, so nobody recreates one by eye for a sign.
  • The colours.

Written as numbers for screen, print and vinyl, which is what keeps twenty shopfronts matching.
  • The type.

Named, licensed for the whole group, and installed, or locations quietly substitute something similar.
  • The layouts.

Where the mark sits on a card, a sign and a quote, so each location's materials are recognisably the same.

02

What a location must be free to change

Address, phone number, hours, staff photographs and the services actually offered. Locking these creates materials no location can use.

A franchisee who cannot update a phone number without a request will print their own version, and that is where consistency ends.

The four

  • Contact details.

Address, phone and hours, which also have to match the Google listing for that location.
  • Photographs.

The real team and the real premises, which customers respond to more than stock pictures.
  • Services offered.

Not every location sells everything, and advertising what cannot be delivered creates complaints.
  • Local offers.

A suburb promotion needs a template a location can fill in the same day.

03

What keeps the set consistent

Templates each location can fill in, one place to download from, and a short document saying what can be changed. Nothing else holds twenty locations together.

Consistency comes from making the correct version the easiest one to reach.

The four

  • Templates, not instructions.

A form to fill in works. A rule sheet asking somebody to rebuild a layout does not.
  • One place to download from.

Files sent by email get old. A single folder means the newest version is always the one in use.
  • A short rules document.

Two pages naming what is fixed and what is local, written for a franchisee rather than a designer.
  • A check each year.

Locations drift. A yearly look at every location's materials catches it before customers do.

Common questions

What goes in a franchise brand kit?

The mark in every version, the colours as numbers, the licensed type, the layouts, and templates each location can fill in with its own details.

Why do our locations all look slightly different?

Usually the type is not licensed for every location and the templates are hard to use, so each one quietly makes its own version.

How much freedom should a franchisee have?

Full control of contact details, photographs, services and local offers, and none over the mark, the colours, the type or the layouts.

Does each location need its own website?

A page for each location is usually enough, with its own address, hours and reviews, rather than a separate site to maintain.

What does it cost?

One monthly fee covering everything, month to month, no lock-in. The number depends on the business and gets given on the call.
