See them all on Google

Nobody searches for a photographer. They search for a wedding photographer, a newborn photographer, headshots, a family session or product photography, and those are five different businesses.

The single most common mistake in this industry is one website trying to be all of them, which reads to a bride as a photographer who does not really do weddings.

01

The occasion is the business, and doing all of them convinces nobody

Somebody booking a wedding wants a wedding photographer. A site whose portfolio mixes weddings with corporate headshots and pet photography signals a generalist, and for the most emotionally loaded purchase in the category that is a disqualification.

This is uncomfortable because photographers genuinely do shoot several things and need the income from all of them. The answer is not to lie about it; it is to give each occasion its own page with its own portfolio and its own words.

Someone landing on a wedding page should see only weddings, priced for weddings, with the questions a couple actually asks. What else you shoot can live elsewhere on the same site without contaminating it.

The occasions also behave completely differently commercially. Weddings are booked a year ahead on emotion and reputation; headshots are booked next week on convenience and price; commercial work is booked on a brief and a rate card. One page cannot serve them.

The occasions that are their own pages

  • Weddings.

Booked a year ahead, on emotion, with a huge research phase.
  • Newborn and family.

Booked in a narrow window, often anxiously.
  • Headshots and personal branding.

Booked quickly, on convenience and price.
  • Commercial and product.

Booked on a brief, a rate card and reliability.

Refusing to say what it costs sends the enquiry to somebody who did

Photography is the industry most committed to hiding prices and the one where hiding them costs most, because the customer has no reference point at all and will simply keep clicking until somebody gives them one.

The usual defence is that every job is different and a conversation is needed. That is true of every trade that publishes a starting price, and those trades get the enquiry.

A starting figure also filters, which is the part photographers underrate. An enquiry from somebody with a budget a third of yours costs an hour of your evening and produces nothing. A published starting price prevents it before it is sent.

What works is a real range with what is included stated: hours of coverage, number of images, album or no album, travel. The person comparing three photographers chooses the one whose numbers they understood.

The same applies to availability. A booked-out date is a page nobody can see, and a photographer who publishes which dates are still open converts couples who were expecting to wait for a reply.

Photographs are how you sell and the reason nobody finds you

A photography site is almost entirely images, which is exactly the content search engines read least well. Beautiful sites with nothing written on them are the industry's standard failure.

This is fixable without ruining the design. Every gallery can carry a short written piece about the day, the venue, the family, the brief. Real words, about a real job, in the photographer's voice.

Venue and location names are the highest-value words available to a wedding photographer. Couples search the venue, not the profession, and a photographer with a written piece about that venue appears in a search almost nobody is competing for.

The technical half matters more here than in most industries too. A gallery of full-resolution images is slow, and slow loses the person deciding on a phone, which is where most of this browsing happens.

04

What actually moves it

One page per occasion, a starting price on each, a written piece with every real job, venue names used properly, and galleries that load fast on a phone.

The venue pieces are the cheapest competitive advantage in wedding photography and almost nobody bothers. Twenty short posts about twenty venues you have shot at is twenty searches you can plausibly win against photographers who wrote nothing.

The pricing decision is the one that changes enquiry quality immediately, and it works in both directions: fewer wasted conversations, and more enquiries from people who already accepted your number before writing.

Then reviews, which in this industry carry an unusual weight because the client is buying something that does not exist yet from somebody they have met once. Reviews describing what the day was like with you there do more than any portfolio image.

What to fix, in order

  • Split the occasions into their own pages.

Each with its own portfolio and its own words.
  • Publish a starting price per occasion.

    With what is included.
  • Write something with every real job.

Venue named, in your own voice.
  • Make the galleries fast on a phone.

Most of this browsing happens there.

A photography website is judged on its pictures and found on its words. Most in this industry have solved the first half beautifully and never attempted the second.

Common questions

How long does SEO take for a photographer?

Three to six months for the occasion pages, and the venue pieces start working sooner because so few photographers write them. Weddings are the slowest because the booking cycle itself is a year long.

Should I put my prices on the site?

A starting figure with what is included. Photography hides prices more than any comparable industry, and the customer with no reference point simply keeps clicking until somebody gives them one.

Do I need separate pages for weddings and headshots?

Yes. A bride who sees corporate headshots beside your wedding portfolio reads you as a generalist, and for the most emotional purchase in the category that is enough to lose the enquiry.

What is the easiest thing nobody in my industry does?

Write a short piece about every venue you shoot at, with the venue named. Couples search the venue rather than the profession, and almost no photographer is competing for those searches.
