For Newcastle businesses measuring the wrong thing

Google Analytics 4 setup in Newcastle: count enquiries, not visits.

Most accounts are installed and then never configured, so they count visits and miss every enquiry.

He created a stunning website for us that captures and nurtures leads with an automated email marketing system, which has filled a huge gap in the business and saved a lot of time (and money!).

See them all on Google

Google Analytics 4 setup in Newcastle usually means one thing in practice: making the account count enquiries rather than visitors.

An account that is installed and left alone reports traffic, which is the least useful number a small business can have.

01

What a small business should actually count

Calls, form submissions and, where they exist, bookings. Three numbers, each tied back to how the person found you.

Traffic answers a question almost no small business is asking. What matters is how many people got in touch and where they came from.

The three to set up

  • Phone calls from the site.

The single most common gap, and on a trade site it is most of the enquiries.
  • Form submissions.

Counted when the form actually arrives, not when somebody clicks send.
  • Bookings, if you take them.

Counted at confirmation rather than at the start of the process.
  • Where each one came from.

Search, map, advertising or direct. Without this the other three cannot be acted on.

What to ignore

Bounce rate, time on page, and most of the default reports. They are interesting and they change nothing a small business decides.

The default reports are built for large sites with many pages and many goals, and reading them closely is a good way to spend an hour learning nothing.

Safe to ignore

  • Session counts on their own.

A number that goes up and down without telling you why.
  • Time on page.

On a page whose job is a phone call, a short visit is often a success.
  • Most default reports.

Built for a different kind of website entirely.
  • Comparisons to industry averages.

Different businesses, different pages, different meaning.

How to tell whether yours is set up

Submit your own form and tap your own phone number, then look for both in the account the next day. If they are not there, it is counting visits only.

This takes five minutes and settles the question better than any audit, because it tests the thing rather than the settings.

The check

  • Tap the phone number on your own site.

From a phone, not a desk computer.
  • Submit the contact form.

And confirm the message actually arrived somewhere.
  • Look the next day.

Both should appear as events you can count.
  • Check where they say they came from.

If everything reads as direct, the tracking is incomplete.

Common questions

What should a small business measure in Analytics?

Calls, form submissions and bookings, each tied to how the person found you. Visitor counts on their own change no decision.

Why are my phone calls not showing up?

Because counting a tap on a phone number has to be set up. It is the most common gap in an otherwise working account.

Is bounce rate worth watching?

Rarely for a small business. On a page whose job is a phone call, a short visit is often a success rather than a failure.

How do I know if mine is set up properly?

Tap your own phone number and submit your own form, then look for both in the account the next day. If they are missing, it is counting visits only.

What does it cost?

One monthly fee covering everything, month to month, no lock-in. The number depends on the business and gets given on the call.
