What does local SEO include?

Local SEO is the work that helps people nearby find your business on Google Maps and in ordinary search results.

The short answer

In short.

It usually covers four things: a complete and accurate Google Business Profile, useful service pages on your website, consistent business details across the web, and a steady way of asking real customers for reviews. Measuring where you appear, across the areas you serve, sits alongside all four.

1. Your Google Business Profile

The profile is the listing with your phone number, hours, photos and reviews. Local SEO checks the categories, the services list, the hours, the photos and the location settings, and keeps them current as the business changes.

2. Service pages on your website

A customer may read about a service before they call. Each main service needs a page that explains what it is, who it suits, where you do it and how to get in touch.

3. Consistent business details

Your name, address and phone number should match on your website, your profile and the directories that list you. Old details get corrected or removed.

4. Genuine reviews

Reviews are part of how Google judges how well known a business is. Local SEO includes a practical routine for asking real customers and replying to what they write.

5. Measuring the right thing

A single ranking check tells you little, because results change with where the searcher is standing. Local SEO measures the same searches from several points across your area and compares them over time, alongside the enquiries you actually receive.

What decides the result

Google's own guidance says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. The work above improves relevance and prominence. Distance stays a constraint: no amount of work moves your business closer to every customer.

Do you need a new website?

Not necessarily. If your site already explains your services clearly, works on a phone and lets people enquire, the work can focus on the gaps elsewhere.

Common questions

Questions people ask.

Is local SEO the same as Google Ads?

No. Ads appear in their own labelled spots and stop when you stop paying. Local SEO is the work on your profile, pages and reviews that decides where you appear in the map and ordinary results.

Can local SEO cover Lake Macquarie as well as Newcastle?

Yes, if the business genuinely serves both. The scope depends on the services, the existing pages and your visibility in each area. A wider service area does not remove the distance factor.
