Marketing advice

What does a marketing consultant do for a small business?

A marketing consultant helps you decide which marketing work to do, in what order, and why.

The short answer

In short.

They review your business, your customers and what you already have, such as your website, Google listing, ads and how enquiries are handled, then recommend a practical plan. Some consultants only advise; others also carry out the work. A good quote makes clear which you are getting.

They start with the business, not the tactic

Which work do you want more of? Which customers suit it? How many enquiries can you actually handle? Recommendations only make sense once those are clear.

They review what you already have

Your website, your search presence, any campaigns and how enquiries are answered. The records you have, such as enquiry numbers and sales, make the review sharper.

They set priorities

What needs attention first, what can wait, and which changes depend on others. For example, there is little point running ads to a page that does not explain the service.

They define the next step

The proposed work, who will carry it out and how progress will be judged.

Advice or implementation?

Consulting and doing the work are different. Ask whether you are paying for recommendations, help putting them into practice, or ongoing support.

When you might need one

When you have several ideas and limited time or budget, when past marketing did not deliver and you are not sure why, or when you are starting a business and want to do things in the right order. Business.gov.au has a free guide to writing a marketing plan that is worth reading first.

Common questions

Questions people ask.

Will a marketing consultant tell me I need a new website?

Only where the evidence supports it. A review may instead find a specific page, a listing issue or a gap in how enquiries are handled.
