He created a stunning website for us that captures and nurtures leads with an automated email marketing system, which has filled a huge gap in the business and saved a lot of time (and money!).
A lot of Mayfield trade is one business selling to another, and those searches usually do not show a map at all.
That single difference turns most local SEO advice upside down here, and it moves the work off the Google listing and onto the website.
Business to business searches are longer and more specific, and Google answers them with ordinary results rather than a map. Where there is no map, the listing cannot win the search and the pages have to.
Mayfield carries Newcastle's industrial history and still holds a lot of light industry, engineering and transport alongside the shops on Maitland Road. It is two economies on one street.
The retail half behaves like any other suburb: nearby customers, a map, a listing that decides it. The industrial half does not. Somebody sourcing a fabricator or a specialist service types a long, precise phrase and reads results, not pins.
We are five minutes away in Wickham, which for the retail half matters and for the industrial half is beside the point. That is the clearest sign these are two different jobs.
For the shops, the listing and distance. For the trade and industrial businesses, whether the website has a page that answers the exact thing being searched for.

The specific searches are worth far more per enquiry and there are far fewer of them. That changes the economics: a single page answering one precise search properly can be worth more than a month of general local visibility.
Engineering, fabrication, transport and specialist trades, plus the retail and services along Maitland Road, and the two need different work.
For the business to business half, the value is in a small number of high-value searches. Being the only local result that clearly answers a precise query is worth more than being one of three pins.
For the Maitland Road half, it is the ordinary local job: a complete listing, current details and reviews, competing with the businesses immediately around them.
It helps least where all the work arrives through a parent company, a tender process or a single long-term customer, which does happen here more than in most suburbs.
Work out which half of Mayfield you are in, because the first job is genuinely different for each.
For a Mayfield business the pages usually matter more than the listing, because the searches are specific enough that the map often does not appear. Starting with listing polish on a business like that is effort spent in the wrong place.
For the retail and consumer-facing side, the order is the usual one: categories and services list first because they are free and fast, then reviews, then pages.
Either way the pages are where the specific searches get answered, and it is where the work across Newcastle and the work here meet.
Half of Mayfield is a map problem and half of it is not. Knowing which half you are in is most of the decision, and the report answers it.

Less than elsewhere. A lot of Mayfield trade is business to business, and those searches return ordinary results rather than a map, so the website does the work.
That is usually the argument for doing it. In a market where few competitors have finished the basics, a small amount of work takes the position outright.
Listing changes can show within days. Pages take longer, because they have to be found, read and trusted before they rank.
The map position and the site's standing for the specific searches that matter to you, side by side. It is yours whether you use us or not.
