Type a trade and the word Maitland into a phone and Google answers with a map. Three businesses sit under it, and most people ring one of those three without scrolling past them.
This page is about how that group of three gets picked in Maitland, why it is not the same three that show in Newcastle, and what is worth doing about it first.
Google builds the map from where the phone is. A search made on High Street returns a different three businesses than the same words typed in Newcastle West, so ranking in one town does not put a business in the other.
Maitland is a river town with a heritage main street and a ring of newer suburbs pushed out around it. The result is two business districts that behave differently: long-established family firms along High Street, and newer trades and services working out of Thornton, Rutherford and the Green Hills end.
Those two ends are far enough apart that Google treats them as different places. A builder at Rutherford and a builder in Central Maitland are both Maitland businesses, and they will not appear on the same map for a customer standing in East Maitland.
We work from Wickham, about half an hour down the New England Highway. That distance is the point rather than a disclaimer: for a search made in Maitland, a business with a Maitland address starts in front of us and in front of every other Newcastle agency, and the listing is what turns that head start into a position.
How well the listing matches the search, how close the business is to the searcher, and how well known the business is. In Maitland the first of those three is where most of the ground is lost.

Distance is fixed. A business cannot move, and in a town shaped like Maitland it is the reason a firm dominates one end and disappears at the other. What can be changed is how clearly the listing says what the business does.
Firms that Maitland already knows. The reviews and the reputation are usually there, and the listing is the part nobody ever finished.
A lot of Maitland businesses have never had to advertise. The town knows them, the work comes in, and the Google listing was set up once by somebody years ago and never touched again. That is the cheapest ranking work there is, because everything expensive has already been earned.
It suits the trades working the newer suburbs for the opposite reason. They have no thirty-year reputation to lean on, and a complete listing is the fastest way to be found by people who have just moved in and know nobody.
It helps least where the searching is not local. If the work comes through builders' merchants, a referral network or council tenders, the map is not where the enquiries start and this is not the first thing to fix.
Open the listing and look at the categories and the services list. In Maitland that is almost always where the missing searches are, and both are free to change.
The categories matter more here than in most places, because Maitland covers enough ground that Google needs telling which searches each end of it answers. A business listed under one broad category is invisible for half of what it sells, regardless of how good the website is.
The order matters more than the effort. Finishing the categories and the services list takes about an hour and can change what a business shows up for inside a week. Reviews and mentions take months, and doing those first while the listing is still half empty wastes them.
After that, the pages. A page about what you do in Maitland, written for somebody in Maitland, is what carries the searches the map does not, and it is where the work across Newcastle and the work up here meet.
The map in Maitland is drawn from the listing, not the website, and the listing is free. That is the whole reason it is worth finishing before spending money on anything else.

It helps a great deal. Maitland is a separate search from Newcastle and ranking in one does not carry you into the other. Without a Maitland address you can still rank in the ordinary results under the map, and that is usually where the work goes for a business serving Maitland from elsewhere.
Because the map is drawn from where the searcher is standing, and those two are far enough apart to return different results. One listing cannot sit at the top across the whole of Maitland, which is what the pages are for.
Listing changes can show within days. Positions that hold take months, because the part that holds them is reviews and mentions, and both are slow by nature.
