Somebody around the lake needs what you sell, so they type it into a phone. Google answers with a map and three businesses under it, and most people ring one of those three.

Lake Macquarie is the hardest place in the Hunter to hold that position, for a reason that has nothing to do with how good the business is. This page is about that reason and what to do about it.

01

Why one listing cannot cover Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie is a council area wrapped around a saltwater lake, and it takes the best part of an hour to drive across. A single listing sits at one point on that map, and the further a searcher is from that point the further down the results the business falls.

This is the thing that catches people out. Two businesses can have equally complete listings, equally good reviews and equally sound websites, and still rank completely differently, because one of them happens to sit closer to where the searching is being done.

A trade covering Toronto through to Belmont is one pin serving an area that takes forty minutes to cross. The map does not know about the driving. It only knows where the pin is, and it will quietly hand the Belmont searches to whoever is closer to Belmont.

We are in Wickham, which is off the lake entirely, fifteen to forty minutes north depending which side you are on. For lake searches that puts us behind any business actually on the water, which is exactly the advantage a Lake Macquarie business should be using.

What decides it here

Match, distance and prominence, the same three as everywhere. What is different about Lake Macquarie is that distance does more of the deciding than it does anywhere else in the region.

one search, two sets of results: the map pack, then everything else

Because distance carries so much weight here, the usual advice about writing more content misses the point. More words on a website do not move a pin. What moves the reachable area is the service area setting, the pages that name the places you actually travel to, and being unmistakable in the searches close to home.

What is worth checking on a lake listing

  • The service area.

A business that travels should say so and name where it goes. A shopfront should not use it at all. Getting this wrong is the most common fault we see around the lake.
  • The suburb pages.

Toronto, Belmont, Warners Bay and Morisset are separate searches. The pin covers one of them properly, and pages are what reach the rest.
  • The categories.

Marine trades in particular get listed under something too general, which removes them from the searches that pay best.

Who this suits around the lake

Businesses that travel to the customer, and businesses in one of the busier centres competing with several others inside the same few streets.

The travelling trades feel it hardest. Landscapers, marine trades, builders and cleaners all cover a large area from one address, and every one of them is being beaten in half their patch by a competitor who is simply closer to it.

The centre businesses have the opposite problem. In Charlestown, Warners Bay or Toronto there are enough competitors inside a small radius that distance stops separating anybody, and the listing and the reviews end up deciding it.

It helps least for a business selling to other businesses across the region, where the searches are specific enough that no map appears at all.

What we would do first

Set the service area honestly and check what the listing claims about where the business works. Around the lake that single field decides how much ground the listing can reach.

For a Lake Macquarie business the service area and the pages are what cover the ground the pin cannot. That is a genuinely different first job from a business with one shopfront on one street, and following generic advice here wastes months.

The order matters more than the effort. The listing fields are free and can change what you appear for within the week. Reviews and mentions take months, and doing those first while the listing still under-claims your area wastes them.

After that, the pages. A page about the work as you do it in Toronto, or Belmont, or Warners Bay, is what reaches searches the pin will never reach, and it is where the work across Newcastle and the work around the lake meet.

Around the lake the question is not whether the listing is good. It is how far the listing reaches, and that is a different job with a different order of work.

Common questions

Do I need an address on the lake to rank on the lake?

It helps a great deal, because distance is one of the three things Google weighs and Lake Macquarie is big enough for that to bite hard. Without one you can still rank in the ordinary results under the map, which is where the work goes for a business serving the lake from outside it.

Why do I rank in Toronto and vanish in Belmont?

Because the map is redrawn from wherever the searcher is standing, and those two are far enough apart to return different businesses. No single listing holds the top spot across the whole lake.

Should I open a second location to cover the other side?

Only if it is a real place of business with real staff. A fake address is the fastest way to lose a listing entirely, and the pages do most of that job legitimately.
