Most Merewether searching is done by somebody standing within a few streets of the business they are about to ring. The map is not a marketing channel here, it is the shopfront.
That closeness makes the work simpler than it is almost anywhere else, and it makes the gaps more expensive.
A Merewether search is usually made close by, so the three businesses shown are the three nearest ones Google is confident about. Confidence comes from a finished listing, which is why an incomplete one costs a position immediately.
Merewether is a beach suburb with a strip of cafes, clinics and personal services behind it, and a customer base that mostly lives within walking distance of the businesses it uses.
When the customer is that close, the website barely enters the decision. Somebody looking for a coffee, a physio or a haircut looks at the map, looks at the photographs, looks at the reviews, and rings. Most of them never open a website at all.
We are ten minutes away in Wickham. For a Merewether search that is far enough to matter, which is the point: a business actually in Merewether has an advantage it mostly is not using.
Whether the listing is finished, and whether the photographs and reviews make the business look open, current and worth the walk.

With the customer this close, Google's job is easy and the business's job is small. There is very little to out-think here. There is only a short list of fields, and most listings have half of them blank.
The small local business with a real customer base on its doorstep: cafes, physios, hairdressers, trainers and the trades working on the houses around them.
These are businesses where a finished listing is worth more than a bigger website, because the customer is nearby with a phone and never reads far enough for the website to matter.
It suits the trades working the streets around the beach for a slightly different reason. Their customer is choosing whoever looks established and local, and the listing is the only place that is shown.
It helps least for a business drawing from across Newcastle rather than from Merewether, where the local map is not the main source of enquiries.
Fix the photographs and the hours. In Merewether those two do more of the deciding than anything else, and both take minutes.
Photographs matter more here than on most pages. A customer choosing between two places nearby looks at the pictures on the listing before they look at anything else, and a listing carrying somebody else's blurry photo is losing to one that does not.
Then the categories and the services list, which are free and can change what you appear for inside a week. It is the most common gap on a Merewether listing and the fastest to close.
Then the pages, for the searches the map does not carry, which is where the work across Newcastle and the work here meet.
Here the customer is already close enough. The only question is whether the listing gives Google enough to be certain about you, and that part is free.

Yes, strongly. Merewether searches are usually made very close by, so the address is a real advantage and the nearest complete listing usually takes the position.
For being found, the listing does most of the work here. The website is what people check afterwards to decide you are established, so it matters, just later in the decision than owners expect.
Listing changes can show within days. Positions that hold take months, because reviews are what hold them.
